Sorry for being MIA for the last few weeks but I have a new blog and site ready to go and was waiting to make my next post it - with bigger and better images but sadly, the process is taking WAY longer than I had hoped. That said, I can't keep this couple waiting any longer.

Here's just one image of a gorgeous couple Diana Nazareth and I photographed a couple of weeks ago (you may recognize them from an earlier engagement session). Dave and Melissa were married on a very cold day in December. I can't wait to share more images from their big day but until they see them, this is all I'm posting.

All dressed up and no place to go....

Christmas day at our house is a pretty casual affair. We wake up, open presents in our pajamas and quite often, the boys stay just like that for the entire day. It's comfy, fun and lets face it... there are way too may other important things to do after Santa has made his appearance than worry about getting dressed. That's what I thought anyways until I saw these cuties in (what will be) their Christmas dresses. Now if my boys were this fun to dress up there is no way an all-day pj event would fly.

These two little ladies (who I have a bit of a soft spot for as they're friends with my boys and it's their home that I leave my boys at when I'm working) were AMAZINGLY easy to work with on a very cold day this past weekend. Throwing coats on and off, moving them here and there, asking them to look at the camera... they didn't complain once. Seriously... not once!

Part of being a photographer (as with pretty much anything) is constantly educating yourself, pushing yourself in new directions and trying new things. Workshops are a great way to do this and I LOVE them! This past weekend I headed to Toronto to take a two-day wedding photography workshop with the amazing Tara McMullen. A great eye, huge talent and a brilliant personality... what more could you ask for in an instructor?

Day one was spent with a fun, recently engaged couple who braved the cold with us and day two was shared with a recent bride and groom. The location was stunning and the models perfect. Take a look....

This little guy was supposed to be my first newborn shoot in December. He surprised everyone with an early arrival this past weekend though (made mom miss her baby shower in fact) so I got to meet him a little sooner than expected. He gave me a bit of a hard time in the beginning but when he's this cute, he's allowed!

Let me introduce Colton. He is seven days old, has a very proud mom and dad, he's quiet and alert, has enviable eye lashes and I can pretty much guarantee that he's going to be a heartbreaker.

This shoot marked the end of an important time for this family. This was the last day of this mama's maternity leave. Although I've never been on mat leave myself (ahhh the joys of self employment), I can well imagine it has got to be tough switching gears. Bittersweet I'm sure but I think everyone will do just fine. Look at these boys... little men and can you believe their gorgeous brown eyes?

The countdown is on. This family is about to change. Their family of three will soon be a family of four and I have no doubt that this little guy will make an amazing big brother.

I vaguely remember those single child days. Although they seemed hectic at times, they were nothing compared to the days with two (and I can't imagine how those with three or more do it). It gets crazy. Sanity becomes a thing of the past but the laughter and love that fills your house makes it so worth it.

Meet my next wedding couple who are walking down the aisle in less than two months. She warned me he was not a fan of having his picture taken. They both admitted they were a bit nervous the morning of the shoot. Who would know looking at these shots... I'm really not that scary and they were naturals (even good at hiding how cold it really was that day!) Can't wait to see them on their 'big day'.

The days are getting colder - crisp fall mornings are here. I must admit, I'm not much of a winter person. I like the sun and miss it in the mornings and evenings already so I'm savouring these last few moments of fall sunshine. This shoot was on a day with wild wind warnings but looking back now, it all looks quite warm and serene. I wish I could bottle up just a bit of this and keep it close over the next few months.

My previous post spoke to what a huge compliment it is when clients ask me to return months or years later to photograph them again. That's one way to make me a happy photographer. Another is to bring treats to the session (now if that's not a blatant hint) - this family did both! The mother of these lucky boys owns a bakery in Kingston (and if you live in or around Kingston, do yourself a favour and stop by Card's Bakery... the carrot squares are amazing!)

This was my third session with these guys so they are no stranger to my camera. I've loved watching them grow, they always keep me on my toes and as always, we had a fun afternoon!

As photographers (I think I can say this on behalf of a lot of my photographer friends) we thrive on feedback. Blog comments, facebook comments, emails, you name it. Because photography is such a subjective thing, I'm never sure when I put something out there, how it will be received. That's why comments mean so much. It helps me not only see what is liked but what people notice. I think it's HUGE when someone actually takes time out of their day to leave a comment. And when clients respond warmly about their photos, that's even bigger but what's even more amazing is when clients ask you to return.

This weekend I headed to Toronto to photograph two pretty special families - both of which I've photographed now three times. Here's the first family - a beautiful late afternoon on U of T campus (where both parents happen to work).

With the first shoot interrupted by a sudden downpour and a rush to the car for cover, we finished the shoot off just a few days later. A family I've know for a while now... great friends, adorable kids and grandparents who bring huge smiles to the faces of their grandchildren.

In the last week or so I've photographed 3 golden retrievers, a lab, a pug and an english bulldog. No, I'm not a pet photographer, these guys just happen to be important family members and who am I to discriminate? And I have to admit I kind of fell in love with this pup. How could you not adore this face?

Spiders and dinosaurs were heavy topics at my shoot the other day - I felt right at home. Although I love little girls, give me a circle of dirt full of dinosaurs and I'm happy. I don't adore spiders but watching one feast on a bee is a bit intriguing. Yes, maybe it's a good thing I had boys.

After a couple attempts at a shoot, I finally got out to visit this family and so happy I did. Another amazing fall day - another great family (I'm starting to sound a bit redundant here). Seriously though, these guys were a pleasure to visit. I even got a lesson on dinosaurs (this kid knows his stuff)!

It's been a while since I photographed this age and I almost forgot how tough it is. One and a half to two years is a busy time in a child's life - lots to explore, lots to see and do... not much time for photos. When mom called me to ask how I could photograph her son... how would I get him to stay still I didn't really have an answer - I don't. I just follow their lead and do my best to capture them as they are at that moment in time. I hope I did this little guy justice. He's adorable and with sweet blonde curls that mom said she's hanging on to as long as she can, he reminded me of my oldest at this age. I fought that first haircut for so long and I miss those baby curls!

When Shannon of Shannonview Photography asked me to help her out with an upcoming wedding, she sold me on the fact that the couple getting married was cool, fun and up for anything. How could I say no to that? Well, the wedding was this past weekend and it did not disappoint! It was in the most adorable country chapel and inside I witnessed such an intimate, warm ceremony that was different than any other I've been a part of. Simple, real and full of heart. It wrapped up with a song sang by the groom to the bride with a little help from some of their friends and then everyone headed outside for a little champagne under a full, perfect moon.

Back in March I ran a little contest for a free shoot and digital package. I was amazed with the number of entries and thrilled when I drew the winner - an old friend from Toronto who I met right after I had my first son. We'd meet at a coffee shop or park with some other moms, let our babies play and chat about everything under the sun (what I wouldn't do to have just a couple of mornings like that again - no schedule, just a wee baby tote to around and some friends to visit). Well, her baby is now almost six and she's since added another.

We've made a few attempts at fitting this shoot in but her hubby is on the road a lot and when home and the weather is nice, these two fill their days jumping out of planes. So, this past weekend we made it happen... toured around their hometown of Port Colborne and of course, ended the shoot at the drop zone.

And I PROMISE to come back in the spring - not to shoot but to jump!

Meet Benjamin and Bianca. Two sweethearts I met earlier this week. I LOVE photographing newborns so I was in my glory with two of them! And they were so good - their mom said they are daytime sleepers and she was right (good for me, bad for mom). It was a super warm day so we decided to take the second half of the shoot outside. Huge thanks to Kelly Gemmell for her help - a second set of hands is so nice when there are two involved (which I'm sure Benjamin and Bianca's parents are discovering).

This past weekend I got a glimpse into what it would be like to be a part of a large family and no, this isn't an 'only child' or, as I used to call it, 'lonely child' rant but just sharing what a happy place this family took me to. Lots of smiles and laughs and two amazing parents behind it all. Not sure exactly what the recipe is for over 50 years of marriage but I'd love to get just a taste of what these two share. Thank you for letting me be a part of your family, even if just for one day.

I hate that I can't control the weather. I watch it like a hawk. In fact, the weather network and I are pretty tight but I've yet to find a way to control it.

This was one of those days when I thought it had us beat. I drove out to Thorndale, all the way hoping the skies would clear. Still raining when I arrived, we waited, we watched but the rain kept coming down but instead of packing it in and rescheduling, this determined family wouldn't let a few drops get in the way of a family shoot. We headed outside under tree cover (thank goodness the property was full of them) and although we couldn't shoot around all the gorgeous gardens, we did get in what counts the most - some fun, some family and lots of smiles.

and just when the weather decides to cooperate, just when you think all is good... you realize it's not just the weather that we can't control.

A couple of weeks ago I headed to Toronto for a weekend workshop with Steve Carty. A 2-day fashion workshop and no, I'm not packing in my current business and switching to fashion photography but I thought it was a good idea to step outside of my comfort zone - into a place I really knew nothing about - to see if I could learn a thing or two. Sweet little Alex has made her appearance and is now the little sister to two amazing big sisters. I love watching families grow and spending time with this new addition was a treat. Today was a nice overcast day so I decided to steal my little guy away for a 10 minute photoshoot to try out a new prop find. With the promise of a red sucker, we walked literally one minute to the 'forest' by our house (it's actually a small treed area but a forest in the eyes of our boys) and snapped a few shots before getting eaten alive by mosquitoes. Here's Theo in my new (old) red wagon. And I'm now quite certain I love my new lens.

When they're first born you could sit and watch them for hours. Watch them breath, drool, snore… you name it. Then as they get a bit older you watch again in amazement at all the things they do - how quickly they learn, how fast they grow and wish it would all slow down. Then you have those days you thought would never end. When their will, determination and all other things you want to instil in them threaten your sanity and you long for those younger days. But then you come to realize the pleasure they give you - having real conversations, not goo-gaga kind of stuff but real talks. How they develop their own ideas and opinions as they get older. Make their own choices and you start to see glimpses of the kind of person they're going to grow up to be.

It has been five years now. Five years that Quincy has been a part of our lives (not including those many months in my belly). Five years we've watched him grow, learn, become the little man he is. Half a decade… it's a big one and to celebrate we had a party. Nine of his closest friends came over for a little bash and, having learned from last year's party, this year I sought out a bit of help. We found a magician and that magician was Ricky Magic. What could be more perfect for a child's birthday?

Not only was Ricky a great magician, he keep the interest of eleven 3-6 year olds for a full hour. Magic, puppets, songs, lots of interaction... I think maybe one of the kids got up quickly to use the bathroom during that hour - that's it. That alone speaks volumes! He was great - the kids had a blast and it's written all over their faces...

A little peek and a note for moms-to-be...

Newborn shoots are best done between the 5th and 10th day (I've personally had the best luck with days 5 and 6) and I know that seems early and as new parents... there's so much to deal with that first week or so but honestly, if you really want to capture that true 'newborn look', that's when to do it. It's during that time when newborns sleep soundly making it easier to reposition without waking them, their limbs are still in that curled position allowing for the 'newborn' poses and baby acne and colic, if they're going to appear, haven't yet!

This little guy came to me well past that 'newborn' stage. In fact he was in the month old range so I was unsure of what we'd get and he definitely gave us a run for our money but persistence pays off and we managed to get some cute shots.

(but note to all moms-to-be... please don't wait this long - newborns must be within those first 2 weeks for a newborn shoot)

Can't wait to watch this little guy grow. He's going to be a heartbreaker!

Back in the hood...

A gorgeous summer evening, a super cute wee man full of personality, and a simple walk around the neighbourhood (my old hood in fact). Erin is a friend of mine from university who I found out, now lives only a block away from our old house in Toronto. Too bad the timing wasn't right... I know our boys would have been good friends. I have a real soft spot for this neighbourhood - our first house, great neighbours, both our boys were born there... it was nice to be back!

And sure we had other plans for the shoot but it's sometimes best to just follow the lead of children...

...and if any photographers out there have any tips on how to make your images look better on blogger, I'd love to chat. They look so much better than they appear - so frustrating!

I had big plans of trying my hand at a bit of fusion for father's day. Mixing some video with photography but you know how the story goes... things get busy, the days go by and before you know it it's the friday before father's day. Well, it's not quite what I had planned - I had imagined more videos to cut from, new photos taken but this is what we have and it was created with love and that's what counts... right?

He loves zombie movies, she reads tarot cards. He plays drums, she the guitar. He has a quiet calm about him and she an infectious smile. Such a fun, cool, genuinely sweet couple. When Rachael started describing Bob to me she used words like artistic and well read. She claimed to pale in comparison to him but that is not the case, both halves of this couple are pretty amazing and spending time with them made me remember days before marriage, mortgages and kids. Days when you could walk for hours, with no concept of time, lose yourself in each other, be real, dream, laugh, enjoy every minute.

Not only did we have a super fun engagement shoot but I also get to capture their big day. Yes, I have truly lucked out when it comes to weddings. A gorgeous, sexy couple for my very first wedding and these two for my second and to top it all off I teaming up again with fellow photographer Diana Nazareth. We had such a great time with our first wedding, we're doing another and hopefully many more together. Thanks for a fun evening guys - I'm looking forward to August!

As part of my first I ♥ Toronto weekend, I got to visit this family. Julie was part of my mommy group back when I lived in Toronto and our oldest kids spent their first year or so visiting at the park, the coffee shop, listening to their moms talk mom stuff. It's amazing how fast they grow and how much people's lives can change in a few short years. They've recently added a new little gal to their family and I got to spend a gorgeous Sunday morning with the four of them.

I've tossed around the idea of wedding photography for a while now but all in all, have pretty much avoided it, until this past weekend that is. It took an amazing partner (Diana Nazareth - check her out), a gorgeous bride (who also happens to be a great photographer as well, Jaime Coyle ) and a small, intimate wedding to get my feet wet. It was the perfect first wedding. Not only was Jaime willing and beautiful, she, along with her now husband Dave were so cool about the entire day. Not even the threatening thunderstorms could stress them out. We went on about our day amidst the rain and had to smile as it ended just in time to head to the Distillery District and have some fun shooting the couple alone.

and when I mentioned this to the couple celebrating that very number together, they said "and still in love"... it doesn't get much better than that.

Being an only child I'm always intrigued by large families. I never really longed to be a part of one - sure I dreamed of one day having a brother but it was only ever one, and an older one at that which is a pretty tough request. I'm more of a one-on-one kind of girl. Large groups intimidate me and tend bring out the shy school girl I once was. This family however made me wish I grew up in a house full of siblings - an extended family of 20, all together this past weekend to celebrate their parents' 45th anniversary. My camera was kept pretty busy and I'm still sorting through the shots but here are just a few from the day.

I consider myself pretty lucky to carry the title of mom - it's one I hold proudly.

Being a mom is one of, if not the toughest jobs around. It's also the most rewarding. Today my boys (with the help of my husband - a pretty good one at that) spoiled me. A special breakfast, presents and lots of love. The best present is pictured below.

100% Quincy and Theo's idea. They wanted to give me something that I could play with. They decided I needed a Barbie and with that Barbie, I could play transformers with them. They even convinced themselves that that Barbie could transform (the skirt comes off and becomes a cape so she can fly with the best of them). Needless to say, Barbie is a little dishevelled looking now, after a few hours of battling transformers but she's mine. My reminder that all my boys really want from me is time. Time sitting and playing... 'us' time.

Happy mother's day to all other moms out there. And to my mom, my step-mom and my mother-in-law, thank you for your time.

Could she be any cuter? This little lady was a dream to photograph... seriously. Newborns are not always the easiest subjects - perhaps the most adorable, the squishiest, the dreamiest but not always the most cooperative. Briar was. She slept the entire shoot, gave little smiles, and put up no fuss. Perhaps it's because her momma is a great photographer (check her work out here ) and photography is in her blood. Perhaps she just knew what was expected. Whatever the reason, here's a little sneak peek - more to come soon.

As photographers we often hide behind the camera. We like it there and although we're constantly telling people to relax in front of the camera and trying to make them think it's an easy thing to do, most of us find it incredibly tough to practice what we preach. I met up with a fellow photographer and friend in Toronto this past weekend and we fought that fight. We caught each other on the other side of the lens and actually had a blast.

I was once so in the dark about blogging. So not interested in the whole phenomenon. Hard to believe that I'm typing my 100th blog post RIGHT NOW. 100 posts - wow! I never know how many people read them, how many look at the pictures, or how many people arrive at my blog thinking I'm the Kelly MacDonald they saw in Trainspotting, Gosford Park or No Country For Old Men. The comments that come trickling in suggest some do visit intentionally and actually read and look at my photos - and I'm so thankful for those! I LOVE feedback - good or bad, it keeps me going. Gives me purpose and a reason to post.

I posted a week or so ago about Theo - my youngest so thought I'd be fair and post about his big brother today. I took him out on a quick location hunt this morning. I have a few shoots coming up and thought I'd tour around looking for places to shoot. He was my model and this was a quick shot that caught my eye. He's at that stage where it so hard to get a shot with a natural smile. He has this goofy fake grin he throws at the camera whenever he thinks I want him to smile. I won't post a picture of that - it's not him. No goofy grin - this is as close as I get to a natural smile these days.

This is Quincy, my big guy. He too loves transformers but in a whole different way than his brother. He knows every transformer - the big names and those mentioned only once in the old reruns - he knows them all and everything about them. Right now he has all of the transformers laid out on the floor of our house, ready to attack in the morning - the autobots separate from the decepticons (poor easter bunny doesn't know what he's in for). All the instructions are laid out as well (in a very orderly manner) for any necessary last minute transformations. He's very smart, very controlling and very meticulous. He loves lego (this kid can whip together just about anything in seconds - he blows my mind) and he is a whiz at puzzles, games and just about anything you can throw at him. He loves avocado, plums, Kashi cereal and candy (any candy). He's my big guy and he scares me. He scares me because I know the day will soon come that my big guy is smarter than me!

Quite honestly some days seem like they'll never end, but before you know it, 365 of them have passed and our babies are all grown up.

This is my baby. My Theo.

A little guy who's all boy. He loves transformers, trains, trucks, cars, superheroes, buzz and woody, making people laugh, pancakes, gummy bears, tic tacs, his brother and he gives the best cuddles. Theo turns three in just two days and although that means he's a pretty big guy, he'll always be my baby.

I'm changing a few things in how I run my business. First off, I'm going to push in-person gallery viewings. Partially for selfish reasons, I'm asking clients to come and have the first viewing of their gallery in person at my home office (or I can travel with laptop to my client's home). Half the fun for me is seeing the reaction of the client when they first see an image. I've received emails right after I post an online gallery from clients telling me they cried when they saw the pictures - I've had quite a few of those actually and without sounding awful, I want to see those tears - they mean more to me than a purchase. They validate why I'm doing what I do. A client screaming via all caps in an email just isn't the same as hearing it when they see their images for the first time.

During this in-person viewing I can also show samples, help with ideas and answer any questions. I will also offer an incentive for orders placed during that meeting. I do understand however that there are always grandparents, friends, family that may also be interested in purchasing images and for that reason, I will also post an on-line gallery for 7 days, during which time all additional orders must be placed.

I want to be part of the entire process - from the initial contact to the product delivery and beyond - and this (the initial viewing) is a major part.

That said, it's not always possible to do an in person viewing. Approximately 40% of my clients are out-of-town and to travel one or two hours to show the gallery is out of the question. In those cases, an on-line gallery will have to do.

This client is one of those. Why am I telling you this now? Well, another change is that I'm going to show just one or two images per sneak peek. I don't want to spoil the surprise that awaits clients in their gallery. These posts will be labelled 'show'. After the gallery goes live, I will then post more images from the shoots and title those posts 'share'. Show and share... that's how it's going to work.

This is my first 'show'. This little man kind of stole my heart. I travelled to Toronto to see him the other day, fought rush hour for over two and a half hours on the way home and smile the whole way. His happiness must have been contagious. He's the most content wee dude I've had the pleasure of spending a couple of hours with in a long time. And who am I to resist a red head...

Just thought I'd share a few pictures of some alternatives to framing. Frames are great - they come in all shapes and sizes, different finishes, colours, with and without mats, you name it - but it's not the only way to display prints.

One option that looks gorgeous on the wall is the gallery wrap. Your photo is printed on canvas, UV laminated for added protection and wrapped on a 2 1/4" stretcher frame. These are stunning as a stand-alone or as part of a collage of canvases. They're available in many sizes - the larger the better in my opinion - and come ready to hang.

The flush mount is another option. Great for storyboards (more than one photo) and look especially good in kids rooms. They're laminated, so they're easy to keep clean, and come ready to hang.

And one of my favourites, the float mount (just had the one below printed - 20x30). Your image is printed and mounted on masonite, laminated to protect it from UV and fingerprints and then attached to a frame that brings it out from the wall so it appears that it's floating. Very modern.

There are more options than what I've shown here and I'll hopefully be able to share more samples soon.

So when it comes time to order, don't just think standard prints and digital files... there's lots more to consider and I can definitely help out with some ideas. And think BIG. I consider 5x7s and 8x10s desk prints - go larger for the wall. Hang something that is going to have an impact. A 24x30 canvas has much more of a 'wow' factor than a small framed print. It's art!

I'd like to use this post to introduce a great project I've recently become a part of...

The Smiling Eyes Project is a group of professional photographers donating their time and talent to photograph people/families dealing with cancer. Christine Kufske, an amazing photographer from Kitchener, started Smiling Eyes four years ago and from then it has grown to a team of 19 photographers all donating up to two shoots a month to those fighting cancer. I'm now on board and so looking forward to the journey.

On this day, four years ago I lost my stepfather to cancer. My mother lost her husband. My boys lost their grampa (a grampa one never had the chance to meet) and many others lost a friend. It was less that two months from the time we found out what we were facing to the time we said our final goodbyes. That time was too short. My oldest son Quincy was only six months at the time so he unfortunately will not remember spending time with his grampa. All I can do now is keep his memory alive in the minds of our boys through stories and pictures. This is why photographs are so important. I so wish we had more pictures of him. I regret not taking some even in those last weeks. Pictures of Quincy with his grampa so he see the smile on his grampa's face when they were together.

I want to give this gift to other families, not only to preserve memories but to make them. I want to give people dealing with this awful disease memories of a fun hour or two spent doing something other than dealing with reality. A well deserved break.

2009 was a great year and I thank everyone - clients, friends, family, blog readers, FB fans... everyone that was a part of it. I met many new faces, the support was amazing and I'm super excited about the coming year. I have sessions already booked, gift certificates to be redeemed, my first wedding to shoot... lots of things planned and some exciting changes.

I've updated my website with some recent pics, new prices, a Q&A section and more to come. I'm looking forward to doing the 3 shoots donated to help raise money and food for the Salvation Army (parentguide.ca) and I've just joined another charity group that has a special place in my heart (more to come on that one soon).

Newborns are one of my favourite subjects to photograph but they are by far the toughest. You work on their terms, their agenda. You can't bribe them. You can't tell jokes to make them laugh. They may poop on you. They may spit up on you. You are at their mercy.

This little guy with big blue eyes was a charmer (and thankfully did not do any of the above to me). He won me over in the first few minutes but then he put me to the test. We had a long shoot and I thank his mom for being so patient. Little Tulley you are a lucky wee man - so loved. Every mother loves their child but you sometimes see a connection that goes beyond... I saw it here.

I LOVE my two boys. I've always been happy with boys, never really had a need to have pink in the house but after meeting this little gal, kinda makes me think a little girl would have been nice. When I book a shoot with a new client it's always a bit of a mystery. What will the family be like? what will they look like? will the weather cooperate? what will the location be like?... so many unknowns.

This past Sunday, I travelled to Toronto for a shoot. A shoot with new clients at a location I suggested but have never seen. You can't believe how thrilled I was when I arrived there to find out the location was AMAZING, the weather was ideal (mild, overcast... perfect in my mind) and a family with some of the most amazing red hair and freckles I have ever seen!

I admit, I've been neglecting the blog for a while now - it's just one of those things that can fall behind when things get busy - but I'm back! I've had a change of pace lately - working on some commercial stuff and most recently my high school senior venture.

Here's my first senior - gorgeous, sweet and a natural model. Thank you Katelyn for weathering the cold, and giving me some great shots! I'm looking forward to shooting more of this age - they look when you ask, look away when you ask, there's no chasing, no bribes necessary... easy work and fun too! It's such an important age to capture - and those cap and gown shots don't quite do our seniors justice.

Our nice days are now numbered so if anyone is looking for an 2009 outdoor shoot, contact me asap - we may be able to squeeze you in. Otherwise I'll start booking for the spring in a few weeks.

So... still in Kingston. Still threatened by rain, I finish session two and start heading to session three. Windshield wipers are going and hoping for another clearing. Drizzle starts to fade as I get close and once again the rain stops. We start to shoot - another beautiful family, more gorgeous fall colours... what more could you ask for.

This time we get in about an hour before the rain hits. Just enough time. Yes, we could have went longer but I think we got what we wanted. Here's the last Kingston family and their adorable dog Clancy who was more than willing to pose for every shot!

Out of our hands...

The weather is something that I have yet to find a way to control. And yet it kind of makes or breaks a shoot. I have NEVER had to cancel due to weather - ever! I've postponed for an hour or two but never cancelled so when I woke up in the hotel room Sunday morning and looked outside to see wet pavement and light rain my heart sunk. Kingston was not where I wanted to be when I had to cancel my first shoot. We had been planning these sessions for some time now and I did not want it all to fall apart because of a bit of rain.

Then, something rather miraculous happened. The rain stopped just as we were about to head outside and shoot. Although it threatened us a few times during the next couple of hours, we got our shoot in - with seconds to spare before it started to rain again. We literally had the perfect window of time to head to a trail, take in some gorgeous surroundings, head back home for a change and snack and do a bit more shooting. And to be honest, although everyone tends to wish for sun, a cloudy sky produces the most beautiful light for photos and this day was no exception.

Why does it always amaze me? I have two boys - I know how fast they grow and how quickly they change but why, when I see it in another family, does it surprise me so much?

I travelled to Kingston for three shoots this past weekend and had a great time with some super nice families. I met this first family last year in Toronto at an extended family shoot at Riverdale Farm. A gorgeous family - adorable kids... what more can I say?

This little guy wasn't even walking last year - now he doesn't stop (except of course for the 30 seconds it took to take this shot).

And his two older brothers... well, they simply got more handsome.

Not too long ago we were waiting for Oliver. Well, it seems Oliver didn't want to wait for anything and arrived 3 weeks ahead of schedule. I had the pleasure of meeting this little guy today and did he make me work! Can you tell he wasn't too impressed with me...

Afraid of missing something, this little trouper stayed awake for most of the shoot (would someone please tell these babies that we like sleepy shots). I'm stubborn though and won't let these babies win - no matter how good of a fight they put up. I'm posting this the night of the shoot because I'm afraid mom didn't think we got any - we did!

Gorgeous blue eyes, chubby cheeks, that amazing baby hair that just stands straight up... this little guy has it all.

His mom contacted me months ago about coming to Stouffville for this shoot. I suggested we wait until he could sit on his own. I love photographing this stage... they can sit, are ALWAYS cute and still stationery (which makes my job a whole lot easier). How adorable is he!

And after loads of smiles, several wardrobe changes and a little snack, he decided to take a bit of a nap. Who can resist a sleeping baby?

I photographed this family last fall and it was one of my favourite shoots of 2008. They came back for another shoot a week or so ago and we had a great time again. Just had to share... I got my dream camera today (ok, well there's always an unattainable dream, this was the attainable one). AND a new super lens. I've only shot a few images with it but wow - look out! So excited to try this baby out on some upcoming sessions.

I've made it through the first year and a half with a great camera, a kit lens and another fabulous (albeit very modest) little lens which I have used about 80% of the time (that's my 50mm 1.4). NOW I have power. This opens a whole new word and I know the camera does NOT make the photographer, but I'm definitely hoping it helps the photographer out just a wee bit!

I have the best job! I get to do what I love most, meet and hang out with some of the nicest people.

My maternity shoot in Ilderton early this week was no exception. My family...

I spend the majority of my time telling clients to relax, act natural, pretend I'm not here... like it's such an easy thing to do. Well, I did the other night. When another local photograper offered to do our family portraits, I jumped at the chance. In the past four years we've likely put over 300 photos into albums - with me in maybe 5 of them. Hard to be on both sides of the camera. I want my boys to know I played a role in their childhood - without pictures, there's no proof. I admit, it's tough being in front of the camera but honestly, not as bad as I thought it would be. I felt a bit awkward - not knowing how to stand, where to look, trying not laugh or get mad as my boys spent 45 minutes making faces, sticking out their tongues... doing everything you don't want them to do in family pics. Then I remembered... I started this business because I wanted to offer something different than the 'portrait studio' way of shooting. I wanted real life. I wanted pictures that are true to actual memories - real laughs, real cries, real craziness. One, two, three, 'say cheese' just doesn't cut it.

deep breath... embrace their craziness and go with it.

I first met this little lady's mother two years ago. It was then that she told me her hopes to adopt – to add to her family, give her boys a little sister and a child a better life. This past weekend I met Gracie. Although she's been in Canada only four short months, she is very much at home here.

And it's not hard to see that her brothers ADORE her! She has two great role models in these boys.

This little girl and I spent quite a while together working on these poses. She was so cooperative, so sweet, I just had to keep telling myself... no more children, I'm happy with two. no more children, I'm happy with two.

Thank you mom and dad for trusting me with your little lady and letting me do my stuff. She's beautiful!

Family of five...

I got to see one of my favourite families again the other night. I photographed them a year ago and couldn't believe how much has changed. Not only do the boys look older, they're now big brothers to a gorgeous little girl. She's a lucky little lady to have these two looking out for her. Here's just a few shots from their session.

Sometimes I wonder how a JOB can be this FUN. Honestly. I meet the nicest people, get to hang out and do what I love to do... and this is work? Gotta love it : )

This couple came from London for an engagement shoot the other night. So nice, fun and in love... wasn't hard to capture their spirit.
